Leon County Judge Judith Hawkins

Leon County Judge Judith Hawkins - Volunteer of the Year

On April 27, 2006, during the local newspaper, Tallahassee Democrat's 28th Annual Recognition Luncheon, Leon County Judge Judith Warren Hawkins was selected as the 2006 Volunteer of the Year - Education. She was selected from over 55 nominees, who satisfied the criteria of participating "in activities related to creating and/ or supporting an environment where knowledge flourishes, whether related or not to a classroom setting."

On her behalf, the Tallahassee Democrat donated $100 to the following organizations: Oak Ridge Elementary PTO, Legal Services of North Florida, Inc., TEAMCHILD Program, The Fla Bar Foundation , Children's Legal Services Program, Girl Scout Council of Apalachee Bend and Leon County Sickle Cell Foundation.

Judge Hawkins was nominated by Oak Ridge Elementary Principal, Hodgetta Huckaby, who shared that over the last eight years, Judge Hawkins has "served as a reading tutor for second grade students, shared test taking strategies with students preparing for the SAT 10 and conducted parent education "Pow Wows." As a judge in our community, she provided a strong role model to promote academic success, service to others and interest in the wider
world."

When Judge Hawkins was invited to volunteer in Ms. Reggenia Baskin's second grade class, she instantly became committed to Ms. Baskin's "kings and queens." In the nomination packet submitted on behalf of Judge Hawkins, Baskin shared that "Judge Hawkins' positive impact upon our school has resulted in the academic improvement of our students, increased parental involvement and the development of self esteem and the self confidence need to attain life's dreams."

Baskin's explained that Judge Hawkins' varied activities with the children were designed to expose them to unfamiliar and new concepts. Health, science and language arts were taught during a lesson on juicing fruits and vegetables. Reading and risk taking skills were developed during vocabulary building exercises. Geography was combined with writing exercises when Judge Hawkins returned from her world wide travels and brought the children souvenirs. Math skills were highlighted while introducing the children to new foods.

In response the Principal Huckaby's request, Judge Hawkins' used her master's level training in family relations an child development to conduct Pow Wows for Oak Ridge parents. The effective parenting skills presented encouraged parents to evaluate and change their ideas to effect changes in their children's behavior.

Over the last 20 plus years, Judge Hawkins has volunteered in elementary, middle and high schools. She began her commitment as a way to be involved in her son's education.

When Ms. Baskin moved to Tallahassee, Judge Hawkins was one of the first persons Ms. Baskin met when she visited the Maranatha SDA Church. Judge Hawkins' warm welcome and invitation to dinner began a relationship which eventually resulted in Judge Hawkins' long term commitment to Ms. Baskin's classes.

Ms. Baskin was also selected as Oak Ridge's Teacher of the Year.
